Athena / Owl
Sigeion (Troad) - AE

Description
Obverse: Head of Athena slightly facing right, wearing triple-crested helmet
Reverse: Owl standing right with a crescent to the left; ΣΙΓΕ
Sigeion had a brief issue of coinage when the Athenian general Chares controlled the town in the late 4th century BC. Chares, who aided the satrap Artabazes in 355 BC, used Sigeion as his base and later retired there in 335 BC. When Alexander the Great visited in 334 BC, Chares presented him with a gold crown in gratitude for a past pardon granted at Athens' request.
